A Few Clues Of A HFA Or High Functioning Alcoholic

While alcohol dependence is a devastating condition that can ruin lives, a few people who struggle with it manage to hold down big responsibilities and stressful jobs. From the outside, these so-called high-functioning alcoholics seem to have it all together. alcoholism can drive nice cars, live in good neighborhoods, and make a substantial income.

Just because they're high-functioning doesn't mean that they're immune to the repercussions of alcohol. They are still at risk of harming themselves and others around them. A pilot nursing a hangover, a surgeon with shaky hands, or a banker managing large sums of money are each at-risk of triggering horrible disasters if they stay on their dysfunctional path.

Here are a few warning signs that can really help in identifying these time bombs:

1. They consume alcohol in place of eating.

Alcoholics will regularly remove and replace meals with a couple of drinks, lose interest in food altogether, or use mealtime as an excuse to begin consuming alcohol.

2. They can get out of bed without having a hangover, even after several drinks.

Consuming alcohol routinely over an extended period of time can cause the physical body to become addicted to alcohol. Often high-functioning alcoholics manage to drink a good deal without having the same hangover that plagues the not habitual drinker.

3. Not drinking makes alcoholism , nervous, or uncomfortable.

If an alcoholic is required to abstain from consuming alcohol, his or her body regularly reciprocates negatively, as they are dependent on the tranquillizing effects of alcohol. Sudden quitting can trigger tension and anxiety, nervousness, sweating, a quickened heart rate, and even seizures.

4. Their behavior patterns alter significantly while under the influence of alcohol.

breathalyzer may alter dramatically when they drink. A typically mild-mannered individual may become aggressive, or make impetuous choices.

5. They cannot have just two drinks.

An alcoholic has a problem quiting, and may even finish others' drinks. Booze will certainly never be left on the table, and there is always an excuse for one more round.

6. Periods of memory loss or "blacking out" are common.

Many problem drinkers will participate in activities that they have no memory of the following day. They may not appear extremely intoxicated at the time, but they're not able to remember events that took place.

7. Attempts to discuss drinking behavior are met with hostility and denial.

When faced with problems involving their drinking, alcoholics will generally retreat to denial or hostility, making conversation difficult.

8. They never fail to have a good explanation for why they drink.

If flat denial or aggression is not the opted for mode of avoidance, most problem drinkers will have a somewhat reasonable explanation for their actions. Stress at the workplace, troubles in the home, or an abundance of social activities are typical reasons to explain their destructive behavior.

9. They hide their alcohol.

Many alcoholics will drink alone, or sneak drinks from a bottle in a desk or in their car. alcoholism of hidden alcohol consumption is an enormous warning and there is no other explanation for this behavior apart from alcohol addiction.

Let's keep our community productive, safe, and sober by keeping our eyes open for questionable actions to get these struggling colleagues, family members, and neighbors the help they need.
